The works of our hands are meaningless. Without love, without faith, everything we strive for is worth nothing. We are taught to work, save money, buy property and perpetuate an endless cycle of trying to get ahead. But what happens when you don't? What if while you're striving for more money, more achievement, everything falls apart? And it almost always does.
Thus, we are pulled once again into the cycle of suffering.
It's true, life is complicated; there are so many variables that can influence how we experience it. With all the suffering in the world, it's easy to lose hope. Suffering has a major effect on the development of our belief system. We all desire to believe in something greater but only our perspective of suffering will determine if that thing is God.
In some sense, our perspective is a choice. We can choose hope. We can choose faith. We can also choose pessimism and sorrow. I think we are most focused, though, on what we cannot choose. We cannot choose how life treats us. We cannot choose our parents, upbringing, income, etc. We cannot choose our gifts and talents or the process by which we learn. But, we can choose how we see our ourselves and the world around us.
Seeing and experiencing life at a greater level, even when suffering is present, requires much intention. Our focus has to be constantly adjusted so that at the forefront of our sight is hope. The presence of faith, hope and love will be what determines our experience here on earth.
Be honest. Be hopeful. Be love.
